Home learning – On Our Doorstep NEW
The focus of the first half term’s branch is Revelation. The revelation of Creation is the first step towards the covenant God forges with his people. In an age-appropriate way, children will consider how the world exists and how all that is came to be. They will learn about the Christian belief that all that exists comes from God, the Creator, who Christians call Father, and that this belief is found in Scripture and the prayers of the Catholic Church. The Church teaches that with this belief come responsibilities to take care of the world God has gifted to humanity.
The focus of the second half term’s branch is for children to develop an early understanding of the Christian belief that God showed us the full depth of his love by sending Jesus his Son. In Jesus, the invisible God becomes visible, and his love is poured out as the child in the manger at Bethlehem. In the first branch, children learn about God’s revelation through the Creation and in this branch, they begin to encounter his revelation in Jesus. The children will journey through the life of Jesus following the Gospel of St Luke. The focus of learning is on the narrative sequence of the story, the importance of Mary’s ‘Yes’ to God and the presence of angels who are God’s messengers and protectors and point to the divine nature of Christ. The children will experience Advent traditions, participate in nativity plays, see the Christmas crib, and learn Christmas carols with the secular traditions that run alongside the Christmas season.
The children will continue to have 2 hours of allocated P.E time during their academic week. The children will have an outdoor session, as well as an indoor session. The children are physically challenged during their playtimes and lunchtimes too. When going outside isn’t possible due to the weather, the children will participate in an alternative physical session.

FIRST HALF TERM
This term the children will be immersed in the story of the The Deep Dark Wood. The children will look at the original tradition tale of Little Red Riding Hood and how the author has adapted the storyline to create an alternative narrative. The children will have lots of short writing opportunities to help them transition into their new year group expectations. By the end of the unit the children will write an innovated traditional tale, using the structure and plot from the story.
We will have a short two week unit where the children will listen to The Pobble who has no toes by Edward Lear. The children will explore rhyme and establish themselves in the genre of poetry.
SECOND HALF TERM
During the second half term the children in Key Stage 1 will be studying the John Lewis Advert – Monty the Penguin. We will dive deep into the connotations and messages behind this short film. We will then explore instruction texts and create our own set of winter themed instruction.
All children in Key Stage 1 will begin their maths journey by deepening their knowledge of place value. Children in Year 1 will be working with numbers up to 20 and children in Year 2 will be working will numbers up to 100. We will then apply what we have learned when we move onto addition and subtraction later in the term. In KS1, we use lots of practical resources to support the children with mathematic problems and build up their independence. But most importantly, we aim to provide every child with an exciting and confidence-boosting maths lesson!
FIRST HALF TERM
Unit: Technology around us
The children will develop their understanding of technology and how it can help them in their everyday lives. They will start to become familiar with the different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills. The children will also consider how to use technology responsibly.
SECOND HALF TERM
Unit: Creating media – Digital painting
The children will develop their understanding of a range of tools used for digital painting. They then use these tools to create their own digital paintings, while gaining inspiration from a range of artists’ work. The unit concludes with learners considering their preferences when painting with and without the use of digital devices
FIRST HALF TERM
Key Question: How can we group animals?
During this unit of work, children will learn about different common animals and be able to discuss their features using scientific language such as feathers, beak, scales, fins etc. They will begin to identify similarities and differences between different animals. Children will also look at the diets of different animals and compare these. Finally, children will focus on humans, identifying body parts and linking these to senses as well as discussing the similarities and differences between humans.
SECOND HALF TERM
Key Question: Why do we need to keep healthy?
During this unit of work, children will learn about the basic needs that all humans need to survive and live. They will study more closely the importance of exercise, a healthy diet and good hygiene as ways to keep us healthy. They will also look at offspring of different animals and how they develop and change into adults as they grow. Finally, children will also look at ways to keep themselves from becoming ill as well as things they can do if they do become ill
Online relationships
This strand explores how technology shapes communication styles and identifies strategies for positive relationships in online communities. It offers opportunities to discuss relationships, respecting, giving and denying consent and behaviours that may lead to harm and how positive online interaction can empower and amplify voice.
Self-image and identity
This strand explores the differences between online and offline identity beginning with self-awareness, shaping online identities and media influence in propagating stereotypes. It identifies effective routes for reporting and support and explores the impact of online technologies on self-image and behaviour.
Module 1: Created and Loved by God
Unit 1: Religious Understanding
Religious Understanding introduces children to the story from the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus welcomed all of the little children to come to Him. The five-story sessions encourage children to understand that they are created by God out of love and for love. Children will revisit this Gospel story at the end of this Module.
Unit 2: Me, My Body, My Health
Building on this knowledge, Me, My Body, My Health encourages children to celebrate similarities and differences between people, including our God-given bodies and the things they enable us to do! Teaching also includes maintaining personal hygiene and the physical differences between boys and girls.
Unit 3: Emotional Well-Being
Emotional Well-Being, children will meet presenters Jayden and Josie and fictional character Super Susie. They will help children to understand and articulate their own changing feelings and how other people’s feelings might differ from theirs. Children will learn how they can manage their feelings and about the consequences of their actions.
Unit 4: Life Cycles
Life Cycles returns to the Gospel story from Unit 1, to show that God created us to follow the cycle of life and He loves us at every stage. Children will learn about the specifics of the human life cycle, including the end of life. Further focus is given to children’s transition through school. Children will learn how to prepare for future changes alongside celebrating how they have already changed and grown
In Geography this term we will be learning about Preston’s location and associated human and physical landmarks. We will use simple compass directions and directional language to describe routes on a map, as well as undertaking some simple fieldwork and using our observational skills to learn about our local area.
FIRST HALF TERM
Autumn 1: Hey You!
This is a six-week Unit of Work. All the learning in this unit is focused around one song: Hey You! – a Hip Hop song for children.
SECOND HALF TERM
During the second half term the children will be preparing for our KS1 Advent Service.
Portraits
This Portraits unit will teach the children about portraits, and use of different materials and techniques when making their own. The children will also have the opportunity to explore the work of Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol, and create artwork inspired by them.
The children will draw self-portraits, use colours in portraits, collage with portraits, explore watercolour backgrounds and create Pop Art portraits inspired by our artists.
Structures – Stability and strength
This half term the children will be designing and making playground equipment that moves for a playmobile character. The children will begin by exploring the components, materials and features of playground equipment. We hope to explore these at a local playground, risk assessment dependent. We will then explore different ways of joining and strengthening materials to create pieces of playground equipment. The children will design and make their own playground equipment as a result of quality research and study. We must test and evaluate our invention with the help of our young children in the school.
Significant Historical People in our Locality
Learie Constantine and Freddie Flintoff
During this unit of work the children will learn about the sport of cricket. They will learn about Freddie Flintoff, a significant sportsman from our local area and Learie Constantine, a equally significant Trinidadian cricketer, lawyer and politician who later moved to Nelson, Lancashire to play cricket. The children will explore the impact of Constantine’s actions and heroic efforts to advocate racial equality. In 1962, Learie Constantine was knighted and also received the Trinity Cross.
During our school council elections in Autumn term, the Year 1/2 children expressed an interest in having ‘non-sporting clubs’ available to make sure everybody has ‘something they love outside of the classroom learning’. Many of our candidates spoke to their friends in Key Stage One and presented their teachers with the idea of a STEM club. This club takes place every Wednesday morning before school with Miss Clarke (Key Stage 1 leader) and other subject leaders from across the school. The children enjoy breakfast together whilst investigating, exploring and questioning the fascinating world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The children gather at the end of each session and plan what they would like to do next. We enjoy visits from our subject leaders in school and also love to develop our own leadership within our club.
