Year 3/4

Year 3/4 Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is bespoke for the children at St. Anthony’s. We have developed an imaginative, broad and balanced programme containing links across the curriculum to ensure a deep and rich learning experience, relevant to the world we live in and our locality. Our curriculum meets the developmental and learning needs of all pupils and is designed to motivate all children to achieve, thrive and to enjoy learning.

All areas of the Lower Key Stage 2 National Curriculum are covered over the course of a two-year cycle. Each year, children build on prior learning and we ensure that they are able to apply the skills they have learnt independently before moving on. Teaching staff collaborate with subject leaders and the leadership team to ensure the curriculum is inspiring, relevant and focused on the needs of our pupils.

Our 3/4 curriculum can be viewed below.

2023/24

Spring Term

English

Our English will be linked to our History unit, Ancient Civilisations. We will be visiting Bolton Museum and experiencing a fantastic day exploring artefacts and finding out about life in Egyptian times. Our class novel will be Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll, which will lead us into descriptive writing, character descriptions and newspaper reports about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s, tomb by Harold Carter.

Maths

Children will build on their knowledge of multiplication and division, which will lead them into learning about length, perimeter and area. This will be followed by units on fractions for both Year 3 and 4 and finally mass and capacity for Year 3 and decimals for Year 4.

History

Inspired by our trip to Bolton Museum, children will explore ancient civilisations with a focus on Ancient Egypt. Children will work as historians to learn about what life was like in the ancient world and where each era occurs in a timeline. Children will look at similarities and differences in ancient civilisations and record their findings.

RE

In RE, children will be studying the topics Galilee to Jerusalem and Desert to Garden. We will look at Jesus and the names He is called, the anointed one and the messiah. We will reflect on the love the people showed for Jesus and think critically about His miracles. Following this, we will study the parable of the prodigal son and the Judgement of Nations parable. Our focus towards the end of Spring will be learning about and reflecting on Holy Week and St. Peter’s story during this time.

Music

Our Music lessons will continue to Our Lady’s Catholic High School, we will continue to learn to play Frere Jacques on the ukulele and begin our next topic. Throughout the year we will study the drums, keyboard, history of music and voice.

PE

In PE, children will be building on their dance skills from earlier in the year, developing their skills in striking and fielding and net and wall. In addition, all three Year 3/4 classes will complete an intensive two week swimming course with the aim of swimming 25 metres unaided, swimming using three strokes and learning about water safety.

Art

Our Art will be linked to our topic of Ancient Egypt, focusing on printing skills to create hieroglyphics and designing and creating scarab beetles out of clay.

Science

In Science this term, children will explore States of Matter and Forces and Magnets. These topics will involve lots of exciting experiments such as investigating the melting points of different materials and exploring the impact of forces on different objects. This will allow children to develop their working scientifically skills alongside developing their knowledge of these new topics.

Computing

In Computing, our focus will be on Creating Media. Children will explore both animation and audio editing. They will use a range of techniques to create a stop-frame animation using tablets, they will then apply those skills to create a story-based animation, finishing with adding media to their animation. This will lead them into examining devices capable of recording digital audio and discussing the ownership of digital audio and the copyright implications. They will Audacity to produce a podcast.

DT

We hope to experience the use of the food technology room at Our Lady’s High School to carry out our cooking and nutrition unit in Design Technology. We will adapt a recipe and prepare it using their wonderful facilities.
