In English, we use the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics programme to support the teaching of early reading and spelling. We use multi-sensory approaches to the teaching of phonics to support the children develop these essential life skills.

To support children reading, we use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme and the Oxford Project X scheme. We also have two well-stocked libraries that contain recently published titles from a variety of different publishers.

We teach writing skills through English but ensure that children transfer their skills across all curriculum areas as a tool to record.

In handwriting, children transition from printing to cursive through Pre cursive writing. Early writers practise adding lead ins and lead outs to letters ensuring the letters start and finish in the correct place for writing to be joined.
